Obama Deals with Notre Dame

President Barack Obama and Pope Benedict XVI

Notre Dame commencements are a family tradition for Morgan Caudle, the fourth member of her family to graduate from the prestigious Catholic university.

"We must find a way to live together as one human family," the president said.

But Caudle, 22, bucked that tradition Sunday, skipping the formal ceremony to attend a rally and prayer vigil organized by students opposed to the university inviting President Obama to speak and receive an honorary degree.

The decision was easy for the Victoria, Texas, native, a Catholic who is expecting her first child May 22.

"I wanted to show my support for life — for my child, my family and my faith," she explained.

Graduating senior Tara Makowski hadn't even planned on attending commencement, but changed her mind after learning Obama would be speaking.

"I think it is a real honor and something I'm always going to remember," said Makowski, 22, of Seattle. "He is the president of the United States."
